2 armed men arrested in Ezakheni after community tip-off
Police recovered handguns and ammunition.
Two men, aged 21 and 31, were arrested and appeared in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court recently after a tip-off from the Ezakheni community.
Police operation
The arrests were made by officers attached to the Ezakheni Visible Policing Unit, working together with members of the Ladysmith K9 Unit.
Recovery of firearms and ammunition
Police pounced on a premises in Ezakheni E-Section, where the men were caught by surprise. A search conducted at the premises led to the recovery of three handguns and ammunition, found in the suspects’ possession.
Charges
The suspects were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, offences regarded as a serious threat to community safety.
Ballistic testing
The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in the commission of any crimes in the country.
Commendation by district commissioner
Acting uThukela district commissioner, Brigadier ZO Kunene, commended the officers involved in the arrest and recovery. He stated that their swift response to valuable community information was an indication that officers in the district are determined to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms.
He further noted that the operation demonstrated the trust the community has in the police and their willingness to work closely with law enforcement.
