Court hands down strong punishment for Estcourt rapist
Police hope this sentence will send a strong message that gender-based violence and violent crime will not be tolerated.
36-year-old Sabelo Khumalo has been sentenced to 95 years in prison for a series of rapes and house robberies he committed in the Ntabamhlophe and Wembezi areas between 2021 and 2023. The Estcourt Regional Court handed down the sentence on Tuesday (March 24).
Court finds him guilty
Khumalo was found guilty of terrorising five women aged between 15 and 36 years old in separate incidents, during which he unlawfully entered their homes, raped them and robbed them of their belongings.
Victims left traumatised
The court emphasised the severe emotional and psychological impact of the crimes, noting that the victims have been left deeply traumatised and continue to live in constant fear for their safety. In light of the gravity of the offences, Khumalo received 75 years’ imprisonment for five counts of rape, along with an additional 20 years for four counts of housebreaking.
Tireless work by Estcourt detectives
Detectives from the Estcourt Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) worked tirelessly to secure the conviction, demonstrating the justice system’s commitment to protecting vulnerable women and children, and holding perpetrators accountable for their heinous crimes.
