Alleged rapist assaulted, shop looted

The foreign national is expected to appear in court today.

A 32-year-old foreign national is expected to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court today (May 15) following an alleged rape in the Nkwezela area of Wembezi, Ward 9, on Wednesday morning (May 13).

According to reports doing the rounds on Estcourt’s social media groups, the suspect allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl. It is further alleged that a community member walked in on the incident and alerted other residents.

Community assaults suspect and loots shop

After community members were informed about the incident, it is alleged that the suspect was assaulted. It is also reported that his shop was looted before police arrived at the scene.

A community member who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons texted the Estcourt News and said: Can you quickly come to Wembezi Garage. People are protesting following allegations that one of the shop owners was found red-handed raping an under-age girl.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident and said the suspect was later arrested. “A 32-year-old foreign national will make an appearance in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that he raped a 16-year-old female in the Nkwezela area of Wembezi. It is further alleged that he was assaulted by the community before being arrested,” Khan said.

Protest and march planned outside court

Community members are expected to protest outside the court during the suspect’s appearance.

The Department of Social Development revealed in a letter sent to the Estcourt News that a march has been planned together with Ward 9 Councillor Mondli Madinane. The march is expected to start at 14:00.
