Mayor celebrates the district’s elderly

In commemoration of the historic milestones in the country's fight for human rights, the Mayor of the Amajuba District Municipality led an impactful engagement session with the district’s senior citizens.

Held on April 3, the engagement session with the district’s elderly sought to raise awareness on matters affecting South Africa’s senior citizens and further deliberated on interventions to respond to their social welfare needs and cater to their fundamental human rights.

Addressing the forum, Mayor Ndabuko Zulu noted with great concern that the broader society often turned a blind eye to older persons who faced neglect, abuse, discrimination, confinement, and exploitation.

Zulu further used the platform to advocate for interventions that responded to the critical needs of the elderly and vulnerable to protect their rights as equal members of society.

“I hope to raise awareness about mental disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in efforts to promote the safety and de-stigmatization of people living with disorders that affect the cognitive function of the brain,” stated Zulu

The day ended with the mayor generously donating food parcels to 105 needy senior citizens within the district.
