Asavela Fanelesimbonge Awwasi from Wembezi Senior Secondary School was announced as the top achiever of last year’s matric class at the ILM 2024 Matric Excellence Awards held on Wednesday (January 22) at Apex Boutique Hotel.

The event was attended by Mayor Mduduzi Myeza, Deputy Mayor Sithabiso Dladla, Speaker Siphiwenkosi Khumalo, Municipal Manager SB Mthembu, the matric class of 2024 and parents.

It was revealed that in the top 10, first position was a tie. Nsebenzo Nkomo from Sicebengolwazi High School was in joint first place. Sicebengolwazi High is a school inside Estcourt prison. His award was accepted by a Correctional Services worker on his behalf. Nkomo also took second position nationally.

As per normal in these awards, the mayor ‘stepped down’ and Awwasi was given the mayoral position for a day, dressed in a mayoral gown and the famous chain.

The top 10 in the Estcourt matric class of 2024 is as follows:

10. Andiswa Zamantungwa Dubazane from Emthonjeniwolwazi High,

9. Olwethu Alwande Khumalo from Estcourt Senior Secondary,

8. Nontokozi Ziyanda Mdakane from Vukasekusile High,

7. Boitumelo Shamel Mpofu from Amahlubi High,

6. Bayanda Percyvate Khumalo from Amahlubi High,

5. Nosipho Nokubonga Ngcobo from Vukasekusile High,

4. Xoliswa Amahle Nyawuza from Amahlubi High,

3. Aarya Bhikral from Estcourt High,

1. Nkomo Nsebenza from Sicebengolwazi High and Asavela Fanelesibonge Awwasi from Wembezi Senior Secondary. Everyone in the top 10 was awarded with a laptop, R4000 for university registration, R2000 for transport when they leave home for university, trophies and certificates.

Mayor Myeza believes that their school visit campaign has yielded ‘good fruit’ in the Estcourt matric results. As part of this campaign, the mayor visits all high schools to encourage learners and donate uniforms and laptops. The mayor thanked all the teachers for their dedication; he went on to give advice to the learners that they must take care of themselves in big cities when pursuing their studies.
