uThukela rolls out sanitation project
200 new VIP toilets will be built in four wards, creating 60 local jobs and improving hygiene for residents.
uThukela District Municipality say they are taking major steps to improve sanitation and restore dignity in local communities. Yesterday (October 9), District Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala was joined by councillors and traditional leaders as he introduced a contractor to begin building precast Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) toilets in the areas of Gqumaweni,Ward 13, and Bethany, Ward 15.
Speaker TY Nqubuka also represented the municipality during visits to Emcijeni, Ward 8, and Ezimambeni,Ward 9, under Okhahlamba Local Municipality.
200 precast VIP toilets will be built; 50 in each ward. This will benefit around 200 households and create 60 temporary jobs. Construction is expected to take six months.
The contractor, DLV Project Managers & Engineers (Pty) Ltd, will ensure that the toilets meet safety and hygiene standards, including proper ventilation systems. Each structure will feature a 1.2-metre pit designed for long-term use.
The mayor said that the project is part of uThukela’s broader plan to tackle sanitation backlogs and improve living conditions. “It is essential that we provide dignified basic services through reliable water and sanitation infrastructure,” he said.
