Councillor Andile Nkosi sworn in as Newcastle deputy mayor
The post of deputy mayor has stood vacant for nearly two years.
The post of deputy mayor has stood vacant for nearly two years following the removal of former deputy mayor, Musa ‘Sugela’ Thwala from Team Sugar South Africa (TSSA).
The vacancy was finally filled yesterday (February 11) when TSSA councillor Andile Nkosi was formally sworn in as Newcastle’s deputy mayor during a special council meeting.

Closely contested secret ballot vote
Nkosi’s appointment followed a closely contested election against ActionSA councillor Shailendra Singh.
The vote was conducted by secret ballot, with the majority of councillors casting their votes in favour of Nkosi.
The meeting was chaired by speaker of council, Councillor Theni Zulu, and attended by councillors, municipal officials and members of the community.
Nkosi took his oath of office before presiding magistrate Lulama Shabangu, who oversaw the proceedings.
In his oath, Nkosi committed to uphold the Constitution and carry out his duties with honour, integrity and dedication to improve the lives of Newcastle residents.
Mayor Dube congratulated Nkosi on his appointment and emphasised the importance of collaboration in delivering on the needs of the community, noting that this remains the primary responsibility of all public servants.
