Madadeni road upgrade project begins construction
Newcastle Municipality has started upgrading gravel roads in Madadeni, with improved tarred roads, drainage systems and pedestrian facilities.
Madadeni is set for a facelift after Newcastle Municipality officially started construction on the Madadeni Road Upgrade Project in Ward 28 and 29.
Madadeni roads set for transformation
According to the municipality, the project is a major infrastructure investment aimed at improving road connectivity, enhancing service delivery and reducing the number of gravel roads across Newcastle.
Funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), the project will see approximately 1.5 kilometres of existing gravel roads upgraded to fully-tarred surfaces by September this year.
The scope of work includes the construction of a five-metre-wide carriageway, earthworks, curbing and channelling, piped storm-water drainage systems, asphalt surfacing, road markings, traffic signage, and a 200-metre pedestrian walkway to improve safety and accessibility for residents.
Project supports local development
The official commencement of construction was marked by a sod-turning ceremony in Ward 29, led by Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube, alongside Council Speaker Thengamehlo Zulu and Deputy Mayor Andile Nkosi.
During the ceremony, the municipality formally introduced the appointed contractor to the community, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability and stakeholder engagement throughout the project.
The municipality confirmed that Simphulwazi Engineers had been appointed as the consulting engineers, while Sikhumbulakwenza Trading CC had been contracted to carry out the construction works. Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project is expected to create temporary employment opportunities for local residents and provide opportunities for local Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to participate, supporting local economic development and community empowerment.
Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, the mayor described the project as a vital investment in Madadeni’s future and a demonstration of the municipality’s commitment to building sustainable, inclusive and resilient communities.
“This project represents more than the construction of a road. It is an investment in dignity, accessibility, safety and economic opportunity for our residents. For many years, communities have experienced challenges associated with gravel roads, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Through projects such as this, we continue to improve the quality of life of our people while steadily advancing our vision of a modern and connected Newcastle,” concluded Dube.
