College student ready to fly SA flag high in Austria
‘’I fell in love with Electrical Engineering when I was doing Grade 10 and we chose the subjects we wanted to do.”
Phiwayinkosi Ntshangase (23) will be flying to Salzburg, Austria, after excelling at the World Skills South Africa (WSSA) competition.
Ntshangase, who is an Electrical Engineering student at Mthashana TVET College, received recognition last week at the Vryheid Mthashana Central Office after winning a gold medal in electrical installation at the WSSA national competition. In the competition, he focused on electrical installation, where he first put together an electrical circuit and then had to run a motor on a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).
Ntshangase, who is originally from Nongoma in eNyokeni, entered the competition at college level. He won and then competed at provincial level, where he also won and went on to the national competition that was held at Ekurhuleni East. There he notched up another impressive win.
Ntshangase says he is now ready to fly the South African flag high when he represents his country in Salzburg, Austria, where the international competition will be held in November this year.
Ntshangase mentioned that he is a handyman at home, where he can fix any appliance that is faulty.
‘’I fell in love with Electrical Engineering when I was doing Grade 10 and we chose the subjects we wanted to do.” He further explained that his parents and the whole family are super proud and happy for him. ‘’People do Electrical Engineering just for the sake of it, but I feel that one must have drive and passion.’’
Ntshangase said that students must believe in themselves and what they do. ’’I believe that when I get back from Austria, I will be even more experienced and knowledgeable. In the coming years, I will use that experience to start my own electrical company and employ people, especially the ones in rural areas, and help them to get skilled.”
The college is proud as well and wish him all the best in the competition and the journey that lies ahead.
