Vryheid learner about to play netball for SA in Dubai
Nomagugu will be playing in Dubai, where she will represent KwaZulu-Natal in the national netball team.
Nomagugu Mavuso is a young girl who is ‘finding herself’ and flying high in the world of sports, specifically netball. From not enjoying the game at all, this Grade 12 learner at Vryheid Comprehensive Secondary School has now been selected for the South African team and will soon be playing overseas.
Nomagugu will be playing in Dubai, where she will represent KwaZulu-Natal in the national netball team. She is a goal defender (GD) in the under 19 team. Nomagugu explains that she started playing netball when she was in Grade 6 at Lakeside Park Primary School, but never really had a passion for it at that stage. “My mother pushed me into sports, as she had a team of girls playing netball, but I never really liked it,” she quips with a smile.‘’
In 2016, there were trials in Bhekuzulu and I took part. I still didn’t really understand or particularly like the game, but a coach spotted me and took an interest. Mam Fikile trained me very well and I played for her team called the Hunter Stars. In 2018, she suggested that I play for the super league, so I played for AbaQulusi Local Municipality and Zululand District. Last year, I went to Cape Town and early this year I played in Mpumalanga. After that, I received an email stating that I had been selected to play for the South African Netball Team. I was in a state of shock and couldn’t believe it; I thought I was being scammed, but it was true and now I’m preparing to play in Dubai.”Nomagugu said she will be playing for two weeks in Dubai. She is very thankful to her coaches: Coach Gugu, Highway Coach, and Coach Mabuyakhulu and Mtha.
“I would like to thank everyone who trained me and made me who I am today. To my fellow netballers and any other sports player out there, I would like to say: please keep pushing and believe in yourself, no matter what.”
