Cholera outbreak is fake news, say uThukela

No case of the disease has been reported in Ladysmith

uThukela District Municipality has noted with concern the misinformation and unverified reports circulating about a supposed ‘cholera outbreak in Ladysmith’.

uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza says there are definitely no cholera cases in town. “What is concerning is that this fake notice discourages people from drinking tap water, as it alleges that the water is contaminated,” says Mkhonza.

He continues to say that the municipal manager has since checked with the laboratory and confirmed that there are no such diagnosed cases. uThukela therefore dismisses the reports of a cholera outbreak. “This is nothing but fake news intending to cause unnecessary panic among the community.”

In light of this, the district municipality urges residents to contact their nearest public health facility if they have concerns or need clarity about health issues,” concluded Mkhonza.
