Substation in Farquhar Road blows up

Some parts of town were left without electricity for a while

There has been panic and anxiety after the electricity unexpectedly went off twice in two consecutive days.

The reason for the power cut this afternoon (June 7) is that a substation in Farquhar Road blew up and caught fire, a scary reminder for some of the substations that exploded in Jantha Street and Newcastle Road recently.

Electricity went off in large parts of town, with residents wondering how long they would be in the dark this time.

The Alfred Duma Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the flames.

Residents came out of their homes and curiously gathered around at the scene to watch the fire-fighters as they battled the blaze.

Thankfully, the power has since been restored to most parts of town.
