Biggarsberg runners take on the ‘Ultimate Human Race’

Siya Ngobese of BBAC said the club is very proud of the runners and is now looking forward to the planning of the famous Mpati Hill race later in the year.

Local Comrades Marathon runners enjoyed a successful ‘down run’ from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on June 11, with 13 of the 14 Biggarsberg Athletics Club (BBAC) associated members finishing the ‘Ultimate Human Race’.

Joel Khumalo was BBAC’s top finisher (898th overall), earning himself a silver medal with a time of 7:29.42.He was followed by Khetokkuhle Mchunu (8:11.12) and Philemon Zondi (8:24.48).

Running in her first Comrades, local doctor Ashleigh Hilliar posted a credible time of 8:40.38 to finish alongside her husband, Dr Shane Hilliar, who was running his 13th Comrades.
The other two novices, Clifford Mkhonza (9:03.47) and Deagan Hilliar (9:31.44), finished well and are already looking forward to lacing up for next year’s race, which will be another ‘down run’.
Other times clocked by BBAC runners: veteran Anton Nkabini completed his 28th Comrades in a time of 8:56.50; Sanele Nxumalo (8:56.09); Sibongeniseni Sibisi (9:49.12); Xolani Mazibuko (9:59.17); Simakahle Khumalo (10:25.52); and Zwelakhe Msimang (11:30.52).
Vusi Sibisi, who was hoping to complete his 25th Comrades, had to bail out before the end, but hopes to be back next year.
