Newcastle High cleans up the CBD

The school's Environmental Club members, together with their teachers, led a clean-up campaign throughout the CBD this past Saturday (February 24).

Led by school principal Manny Govender and event organiser and teacher, Halalisiwe Sibiya, the pupils braved the sweltering heat of the day to clean up the town.

“The clean-up is to raise awareness and to teach our learners to be responsible citizens,” stated Sibiya.

“We want to teach them, about the negative impact that littering has on the environment. “

Separating into groups, the students enthusiastically tackled Allen Street, Hospital Street, Patterson Street and Scott Street, picking up litter and showing the Newcastle residents how it should be done.

“We have to keep our town clean”, Ms Sibiya stressed.

“It is their (the students) responsibility, it is all our responsibility.”

The school has been running a clean-up effort for the past four years, and judging by the enthusiastic, focused, and happy faces on Saturday, the campaign will likely last for a very long time.
