SANBS to host 1 Day – 1 Nation to collect 5000 Units of Blood

If you are between 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and consider your blood safe to transfuse to a patient, you should be able to donate.

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), together with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), will host their first 1 Day, 1 Nation, 5000 Units of Blood campaign in the hopes of collecting 5000 units of blood on Saturday, April 13.

“We are very excited to host the first 1 Day, 1 Nation, 5000 Units of Blood campaign. We hope that all South Africans who are eligible to donate blood will support us on this day,” said Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager for the WCBS.

Both blood services anticipate blood stock shortages leading up to the winter months.

Blood stock levels tend to decline during the Easter period as well as school holidays as donors make their way to their holiday destination, and blood donation might not always be a top priority.

Ramadan started on March 11, which also adds additional pressure to the blood stock levels as Muslim donors can’t donate during the fast.

“Right now, we need all the help we can get from current and potential donors. Moreover, we ask South Africans to become regular donors. By donating blood regularly, we can easily maintain safe stock levels throughout the year,” said Thandi Mosupye, Senior Manager of Marketing, Communication, and Brand for the SANBS.

Join WCBS and SANBS on Saturday, April 13 at any of the following participating blood donation clinics:

  • Newcastle Mall: 09:00 to 16:00
  • San Marco Centre (Ladysmith): 09:00 to 16:00
  • Vryheid Pick ‘n Pay: 09:00 – 15:00
  • Dundee Boulevard: 09:00 – 16:00

Eagle Peak Spur will reward all donors with a Spur voucher on the day.

For more information or to find your closest donation site, visit www.sanbs.org.za or call 0800 11 9031.

  • About the SANBS:

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is an independent non-profit organization and one of the leaders in the discipline of blood transfusion.

SANBS operates in eight out of nine provinces in South Africa (with the exception of the Western Cape, which is serviced by the Western Cape Blood Service).

It also provides crucial support to countries in the SADC region.

SANBS supplies over one million blood products annually and is rated among the top blood services in the world.

This pedigree comes because of world-class testing and collection protocols, which ensure that the blood that is transfused is always of top quality.

The blood is processed into its constituent components: red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Therefore, in principle, a single blood donation can save up to three lives.

  • About the WCBS:

Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is a non-profit regional health organization dedicated to collecting blood from voluntary blood donors and providing the safest blood products and efficient service to the community while operating at the highest professional and ethical standards and remaining a viable organization.

WCBS works without prejudice to supply safe blood and blood products to all communities in the region, from Cape Town all the way up to George.

It’s our goal to deliver a world-class blood service in the Western Cape.
