HRC intervenes in Newcastle sewage issues
The KZN Human Rights Commission paid a visit to Newcastle after numerous complaints about the town's sewage issues .
The town’s serious sewer problems are now a big cause for concern, particularly in light of the health concerns that many of the citizens are experiencing as a result.
Uri Sumair, one of the Newcastle Resident Forum’s ardent members, decided ‘enough is enough’ and initiated the move to contact the Human Rights Commission regarding the sewer problems that have plagued Draper Street for months on end.
The department sent down two commissioners who did an inspection in lieu of the specific problem reported.
The commissioner requested that a comprehensive report be compiled for the jurisdiction of the entire city of Newcastle so that they could investigate these complaints holistically.
Chairperson Matthew Shunmugam has been tasked with compiling the report, which should include reference numbers, photos, press cuttings, and all other relevant documents and requirements.
If you have any major sewer problems and would like the problem area to be included in the report, please email: mattsnewcastle@gmail.com.
“This is only the beginning of our radical stand against the Council,” concluded the NRF.
