KZN MECs visit bus crash victims’ families and injured learners
The investigation into the cause of the accident will be handled by The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on a national level
Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka has consoled the families of the two learners who tragically died in last week’s horror bus crash near Vaalbank.
The bus was transporting 81 learners when the driver lost control, causing the bus to overturn on the R618 in the KwaVilakazi area. The 79 injured learners were transported to various hospitals.
“The Department is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of young lives. We stand in solidarity with the families, and I want to extend my heartfelt condolences,” said MEC Hlomuka when he visited the bereaved families last Thursday.
Two of the three critically injured learners were transported to Greys Hospital while the other was transferred to Ladysmith. Last Tuesday, Siboniso Duma, Transport and Human Settlements MEC, visited the critically injured learners at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
One of these learners, Xoliswa Mthethwa, lost her mother a few months ago and her father is also deceased.
“Zululand is not only the heartbeat of the Zulu Nation but a destination for cultural tourism as it is where the King’s Palaces are located. It is for these reasons that we are respectfully consulting with His Majesty about the rehabilitation and construction of roads in the district and across the province,” MEC Duma said.
The investigation into the cause of the accident will be handled by The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) on a national level. The RTMC is an organisation that works in partnership with national, provincial and local government entities to enhance road traffic services.
