MK youth march against gangsterism
The march was well supported following months of gangsterism in Osizweni that has left many living in fear.
Demands were made for national and provincial intervention to quell gang violence that has racked mainly Osizweni at a march staged by the MK party on Saturday, October 19.
Marchers gathered at Makhanya Garage and walked to the Osizweni police station where the station commander, Captain Sipho Nkosi, was given a memorandum demanding that the SAPS double the number of officers assigned to the gang unit in Osizweni, experienced detectives from the provincial SAPS be deployed to assist local police and that the National Intervention Unit intervene.
Calls were also made for enhanced crime intelligence, increasing police visibility and expanding surveillance technologies such as CCTV cameras. They also requested that community groups like Abaqondisi be better equipped to support police to beef up security.
The protestors gave the station commander 14 to 21 working days to respond to their demands.
