Six tuck shop owners arrested during inspection
Residents are advised to check expiry dates on the goods they buy
After the tragic incident in Naledi, Soweto, where six children died allegedly from eating ‘old’ snacks sold by foreign nationals at their spaza shops, different departments in Vryheid recently took the initiative to conduct an inspection of items sold at local tuck shops.
The initiative was planned by Ward 11 Councillor Mr Mthembu, who invited other relevant stakeholders to visit the shops. The team paid attention to expiry dates, hygiene, and whether the tuck shop owners had permits to be in the country and to trade.
Six tuck shops were closed on Thursday, as the owners did not meet the requirements. Others had goods that were already expired and those goods were taken away.
Home Affairs immigration officers took the opportunity to check permits and six tuck shop owners were arrested for not having said permits.
Residents are advised to check expiry dates on the goods they buy, to prevent possible poisoning and even death.
