Supernatural creatures converge at Fort Amiel for a spooktacular event

An assortment of supernatural creatures, including witches, vampires, pirates, zombies, super-heroes and super-villains, converged at Fort Amiel on October 25 for what proved to be a spooktacular event.

Organiser of Newcastle’s first ever Nightmare Market, Malesha Ragunanan, said she was impressed by the thought and detail guests put into their outfits, adding an element of self-expression to the fun and magic to the well-supported fundraiser.

“Each person had a unique take on the character they decided to dress up as, and that was the highlight of the event for me,” said Ragunanan, who was spoilt for choice when selecting the winner of the ‘best dressed’ competition.

The much-deserved win was eventually awarded to Vashique Naicker, who was unrecognisable in his ‘Day of the Dead’ costume.

Ragunanan explained that her intention in hosting the Nightmare Market was to raise awareness for the prevention of animal abuse in support of the SPCA, to call attention to Newcastle’s unique ‘paranormal history’, and to create a safe, family friendly outing for everyone to enjoy.

“The SPCA receives absolutely no grant funding from the municipality or the government. The organisation is solely dependent on the empathy and generosity of the community for its survival. So, the funds raised at the Nightmare Market were donated to this worthy cause,” she said.

Ragunanan thanked museum curator, Louis Eksteen, for his support and commitment to making history come alive.

She further expressed her gratitude to the volunteers who assisted in making the event a success, Robyn and Nathan Foxcroft, Leon and Theresa Botha, Gert and Petro Gast, Leandra Black, Terri Wessels, and Jenavieve and Daniel Tinkler, as well as members of the scouts, Nico Hattingh, Armand Schoon, Ignatius Schutte, Sharl Van der Mescht, and Charles Adams, and to the team at Fort Amiel, Louis Eksteen, Christel Harding, and Marie Harding.

SPCA manager, Heather Gero, said the funds raised will be used towards the veterinary fees of animals in need. She further extended her thanks to Louis Eksteen for the amazing venue, and to all the volunteers, on behalf of the SPCA.

“Next year’s event will be bigger and better,” promised Ragunanan.
