Remains of man who was burnt to death found in Utrecht field

A man who reported missing in Eshowe led to the discovery of his burnt body in an open field in Ermelo farm, Utrecht.

On January 26, 2025, the Utrecht SAPS received a missing person’s report regarding Sthembiso Mpangase, whose last known address was Frischwerwagh Farm in Utrecht, where he worked, but was originally from the Eshowe area.

Utrecht SAPS Detectives, led by Sgt Madonsela and Sgt Mgaga led the investigation and located Bhekisisa Manqele, who was allegedly involved in Mpangase’s disappearance.

Manqele was arrested and taken for further questioning.

Investigations revealed that on Friday, January  18, 2025, Mpangase and five others were assaulted by their employer with sjamboks, allegedly for stealing livestock.

After the assault, Mpangase began coughing up blood, and by morning, he was found dead.

Mr Manqele called their employer and informed and the employer, with the assistance of Manqele, loaded the victim’s body onto an open bakkie and transported the body to an open field where it was doused with diesel and set on fire.

Mpangase’s remains were discovered on January 27 and a case of murder was opened by the Utrecht SAPS. Manqele was arrested for murder, and two other suspects remain at large.

Manqele made his first court appearance on January 29, where he was remanded in custody.

The investigation continues.
