Municipality demolishes illegal informal settlements in Bergville

These shacks were allegedly crime hot-spots.

In an effort to address residents’ and ratepayers’ complaints, as well as combating safety and security concerns, Okhahlamba Local Municipality has demolished illegal settlements in Bergville.

On Monday (February 17), demolition began at the illegal informal settlements located at the lower end of West Street and Sharrat Street.

The demolition was carried out by a co-ordinated, multi-disciplinary team consisting of municipal law enforcement, Technical Services Department, Housing Unit, Bergville SAPS and Ithemba Security.

According  to Okhahlamba Local Municipality communications officer Suraya Asmal, these illegal settlements have long been a source of numerous problems in the area, fostering an environment of criminal activity including drug trafficking, prostitution and other illegal behaviour.

“The move to clear these settlements is a significant step towards improving the safety and quality of life for Bergville residents. The Department of Human Settlements provided temporary housing, clearing the way for the demolition process to move forward. This initiative marks the beginning of a week-long effort to dismantle all illegal informal settlements in Bergville. The municipality is committed to ensuring that these spaces remain clear and will conduct regular inspections to prevent the re-emergence of illegal settlements in the future.

“This is a monumental step forward for the municipality and a vital part of the ongoing effort to restore safety and order to our community,” said Asmal.
