Week without water in Ezakheni due to massive pipe burst

No water tankers have been dispatched to help those affected.

Unhappy residents have been without water for a week due to a massive main pipe leak at D44 Hambanathi Street in Ezakheni.

uThukela had just completed repairs at the very same spot yesterday afternoon (March 6). The leak started on Monday and residents thought their water woes were over when uThukela workers attended to the problem.

However, in the early hours of this morning, the pipe burst again.

According to Ward Cllr Londathina Hlomuka, the leak has been troubling the community for the past four months. He said they reported the issue back in October when it started.

Hlomuka commented that, “uThukela only came at the beginning of December to try and fix it, but they couldn’t. Seeing it was the festive season and this is a main line that supplies the whole of Ezakheni, they came again in January and the leak was partially fixed; it was still leaking, but not like before. Last week, the situation worsened and I had to put pressure (on the ‘powers that be’) as the water was damaging the Mnyandu family house, hence they (uThukela) came to fix the leak on Monday. We now know they failed again.”

He added that when he arrived at the scene this morning, he also discovered that the sewer pipe that runs parallel to the water pipe has been damaged by the water pressure and it’s now leaking as well.
