A hitch-hiker sadly lost his life in a crash on Thursday. A car and a minibus collided on the R34 Dundee/Vryheid road, close to the Scheepersnek area. The minibus was transporting schoolchildren when it hit a pothole and its tyre burst. This caused the driver to veer into oncoming traffic and smash into a car that was travelling from Vryheid. The driver of the car had picked up a hitch-hiker a few kilometres down the road. The hitch-hiker was declared dead at the scene, while 10 learners sustained minor injuries.
The R34 road has deteriorated drastically in the last couple of months. It is said that heavy rains, the regular use of trucks, and lack of maintenance are the main ‘culprits’ for the current state of the road.
