The old quote says ‘cleanliness is next to Godliness’. With this in mind, Pastor Siyabonga Praise-God Zulu has taken the initiative to clean up the Sasko area with the help of young people.
Zulu, who is a leader at the African Gospel Church, says that he and other residents once had a clean-up campaign in Sasko, which was recently revived after the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl who was raped and killed. Her lifeless body was found in an open field with long grass.
“We have tried to clean our area before, but we realised that the long grass in different open spaces is also a major contributing factor to people committing crimes. We have many spaces in Sasko that have long grass and people are pointing fingers at who must cut the grass. We cannot wait for people to come and rescue us; we, as people living in that area, should start doing things by ourselves.
“We cannot just sit back and fold our arms while our area is suffering; we cannot say we are waiting for councillors or the municipality while we are dying. Right now, I have recruited young men to cut the grass, pick up litter and clean the muddy roads that make it difficult for transport-users to drive through. The main thing that is needed in Sasko is speed humps. We do have a tar road, but cars tend to speed and children are sometimes all over the road, so speed humps are needed before something happens.”
Zulu also states that, “When we are united as people, we can achieve anything. We are in need of donations; any form of donation to help clean up Sasko will be appreciated. We also want to do away with the stigma that says Sasko is a horrible place to live in. Sasko is not a terrible place to stay, but rather people have painted a bad image of the area. Slowly we will revive Sasko and make it a better place.”
Zulu also gives donations to the needy as a sign of giving back and helping those who are less fortunate. He can be contacted on 073 347 1525.
