Water shortages due to silted-up Ezakheni Plant?

uThukela say the pumps are failing because of all the silt and debris.

uThukela District Municipality has issued a statement regarding water shortages in areas receiving water from the Ezakheni Water Treatment Plant.

They say that due to recent heavy rains in and around Ladysmith, the Tugela River has ‘come down’ with loads of silt and debris. This is currently hampering the abstraction process at the Ezakheni Water Treatment Works.

uThukela says that the pumps are failing because of this problem and their abstraction capacity has been reduced in the process.

A service provider was appointed to conduct repairs and source the necessary spares to get the situation back to normal. However, the service provider has since encountered numerous challenges and the work has not been completed. “We are working to resolve the issue. All areas supplied by this plant are affected by water shortages. We will keep the community updated. Apologies for the inconvenience caused,” says the statement.
