Mayor Sifiso Mkhwanazi has strongly urged traffic officers to strictly enforce the law when it comes to motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol over the Easter long weekend.
“It has become a common occurrence during the Easter weekend and festive season that many road accidents are caused by drunken driving. Therefore, officers must be firm in handling (drunk) drivers to effectively combat this scourge,” said Mkhwanazi.
He also highlighted the importance of pedestrian road safety awareness, emphasising that the lack of education regarding road safety is a significant concern, particularly in areas near major roads like Nseka and Shoba.
The mayor said this during the Easter Weekend Road Safety Campaign that took place recently at the accident hot-spot in Lakeside.
The campaign was supported by various stakeholders that included RTI, SAPS, Immigration Unit, towing companies, disaster management and security personnel.
