(Watch): SA kickboxing legends descend in Newcastle

At Monday morning's SA Championship opening ceremony, South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA) president Aslam Mahomed was delighted to announce a 20.45% boost in the number of athletes competing from last year.

The South African National Kickboxing Championships was hosted in Newcastle from Saturday, April 26, to Monday, April 28.

This was the first time the SA Championships convened in Newcastle, which was chosen due to its convenient location between Johannesburg and Durban.

Roughly 600 of South Africa’s best kickboxers convened at the Farmer’s Hall over the long weekend, where more than 2 000 fights took place for an opportunity to represent South Africa in the Africa Championships.

On Saturday, participants lined up at the Newcastle Inn to submit the relevant documentation, weigh-in, and be examined be by a medical team before the fighting commenced.

At the opening ceremony of the SA Championship on Monday morning, president of the South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA), Aslam Mahomed, boasted a 20.45% growth in athlete participation since last year.

“This is testament to the dedication of our athletes, the commitment of our coaches and the unwavering support of our communities,” said Mahomed.

Mahomed further divulged that the South African kickboxing team is the first on the African continent to be ranked fourth in the world.

Five SA kickboxers will be part of the Olympic team competing in the World Games in China later in the year.
