Lions warm hearts and homes with winter drive

The Newcastle Lions Club will continue its Winter Warmer drive, collecting donations to support struggling families with clothing, food, and comfort this year.

First launched in 2017 at Drakensberg School, the Winter Warmer and Teddy Bear Project has been a pillar of kindness in the Newcastle community.

Eight years down the line, the Lions Club of Newcastle remains committed to assisting the less fortunate and families that are struggling financially.

The annual initiative was inspired by the joy a simple teddy bear brought to the children last year, despite there not being enough to go around.

By focusing on soft toys, the project will ensure that every child, regardless of age or gender, receives something comforting during tough times.

Beneficiaries are identified through school feeding schemes and outreach efforts that include residents in railway housing, crisis centres, and other vulnerable groups.

In 2024 alone, the initiative clothed and fed more than 540 people in a single day. With the need still on the rise, community support is more essential than ever before.

The most desperately needed items this year include blankets, toiletries, dried foods, men’s clothing in small sizes, and boys’ clothing in all sizes.

Donations of money are also welcome, which will allow the team to purchase everyday items still needed.

Donations can be dropped off at The Barn, Nashua, Broker Assist, Davida, or Pick n Pay in Hutten Heights.

The Winter Warmer event will take place on Friday, June 21, with the final date for donations set for Wednesday, June 18.

Community members and businesses are also encouraged to sponsor family meals through the Lions’ Food Socks initiative or to help spread awareness through schools, workplaces, and social networks.

“Winter is a dark and difficult time—especially for those who are hungry, cold, and in need,” said the Lions Newcastle team. “Empathy and kindness cost nothing but mean everything. When you give, it comes back to you tenfold.”
