Feathers fly at annual bird show

A bird show is like a beauty pageant for birds, but with lots of scientific knowledge and skill involved.

Cages gleamed, feathers shimmered and chirping filled the air as bird lovers from across South Africa gathered at the Cecil Emmett Hall on Saturday for the annual Vryheid Bird Club Show. This vibrant event showcased the beauty of birds, their breeding excellence and the camaraderie of small-town birding enthusiasts.
Over 600 birds, ranging from budgies to canaries, competed for top honours in front of a panel of trained judges.
Many may wonder what a bird show entails… Well, a local bird show is a competitive event where breeders, hobbyists and clubs bring their birds – typically cage birds such as canaries, budgies, finches, parrots or even poultry – to be judged on various criteria.
The judging criteria include appearance, condition, conformation (shape and structure), colour and markings, behaviour and temperament.

These shows are popular among bird clubs.
Common bird categories include canaries (eg Border, Gloster, Red Factor), budgerigars (often exhibition or show types, larger than pet-store budgies), finches (Zebra, Gouldian, Bengalese), lovebirds, cockatiels and parrots. Fancy pigeons or bantam chickens are also included in some mixed shows.
Each bird is judged against an official breed standard. Judges consider feather condition (no missing or broken feathers), posture and stance, size and proportion, colour intensity and purity, alertness, and overall health. A specific breed that stood out during the show was the German Roller (also known as the Harz Roller) that is a special breed of song canary famous for its beautiful, soft, rolling song. These birds are not judged on appearance, like other show birds, but on the quality of their singing – making them the opera singers of the bird world! There are currently only two judges in South Africa who are skilled to judge these birds – one of whom, Ludwig Blom, judged at the show on Saturday. Alongside the judges, two members of the South African National Cage Bird Association (SANCBA), Chris van der Linde and André Shannon, also attended the show. Chairperson of the Vryheid Bird Club, André Barnard, was pleased with the outcome of the show and said this is an annual event, even though few people in Vryheid know about it.
