Confusion and concern as SASSA beneficiaries report no payments
Several concerned SASSA beneficiaries contacted the Newcastle Advertiser after failing to receive their social grant payments as expected.
Concerned and upset, some social grant recipients feared their payments had been stopped without warning, causing anxiety in the community.
However, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has since confirmed that no grants have been suspended, and that ongoing reviews may have caused temporary confusion.
According to a media statement, delays may have occurred due to a planned verification process. This process is part of a national review to ensure only deserving recipients qualify to continue receiving grants.
“The review process helps make sure that only people who meet the income and eligibility requirements continue to receive grants,” the agency added.
SASSA explained that the goal is to stop fraudulent claims and protect the system for those who truly need support
“SASSA has not suspended any payments, but the payment schedule was changed for beneficiaries who were asked to come in for a review and have not yet done so,” the statement read.
Those affected are required to visit their nearest SASSA office to confirm their personal details and report any new sources of income that might affect their eligibility.
If you are unsure whether you are affected, you should go to your local SASSA office with:
-Your ID (green bar-coded or smart card)
-Proof of any new bank accounts
-Information about any extra income you now receive
