Two women killed in Mondlo road crash

Two women died and 18 injured in taxi crash caused by pothole avoidance.

Two women, Zenzile Ndima (46) and Nomusa Mbatha (52), tragically lost their lives in a horrific crash on the Mondlo road on July 5. They were among a group of ANC supporters travelling to Hlobane when the taxi they were travelling in collided with a bakkie.
According to the taxi driver, he allegedly became distracted by a car ahead that was swerving to avoid potholes. In an attempt to steer clear of that vehicle, he veered into the oncoming lane, where a bakkie was approaching. He tried to return to his lane to avoid the oncoming bakkie, but it was too late; the bakkie crashed into the right side of the taxi.
The spare wheel of the taxi dislodged and struck a third vehicle. Aside from the two fatalities, 18 passengers were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
Community members have once again raised concerns about the dangerous condition of roads in the area, which are often riddled with potholes.
