Man dies after assault, burning in Sasko vigilante attack
A man died after Sasko residents allegedly assaulted and burned him for attempted assault.
An unidentified Malawian man believed to be around 40 years old died after being assaulted and burned by community members in Sasko on Sunday morning.
According to reports, the man allegedly broke into a house in Sasko New Stands with the intention of sexually assaulting a woman in her bedroom. The victim’s screams woke other household members, who confronted the intruder. After a struggle, they managed to tie him up with a rope and called for help from neighbours.
When other community members arrived, they allegedly assaulted the man and set fire to his feet using burning plastic.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the man lying tied up in the yard, gasping for air.
Paramedics rushed him to hospital, but he died in the ambulance. The deceased had visible assault wounds all over his body and head, and severe burns to both feet.
While vigilante justice is suspected to be the reason for the attack, the motive behind the community’s actions remains under investigation by police.
