Government departments unite to donate school shoes
The initiative was inspired by a vision to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Several government departments in Estcourt – including the Estcourt Regional Court, National Prosecuting Authority, Department of Justice, Legal Aid South Africa, Department of Correctional Services and Department of Social Development – visited Celukuphiwa Primary School today (August 6) to donate shoes to underprivileged learners.
Senior interpreter Mr Khumalo from the Department of Justice explained that the initiative was inspired by the vision of a colleague who wanted to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Celukuphiwa Primary School was identified as a beneficiary, and the various departments were joined by private individuals who contributed to the cause.
In addition to the donation, the children were encouraged to report any form of abuse they may be experiencing at home and were taught to recognise the different types of abuse.
The departments stated that, through the cases they handle, they often see the struggles faced by children in various areas of the jurisdiction. This inspired a presiding officer’s vision to reach out, educate children about the basics of the criminal justice system, and encourage them not to remain silent about offences. “We hope to bring about positive change in their lives; this is just the beginning. With faith in God, we aim to continue supporting them. It was heartwarming to see the children smile.”
School principal Mr Mkhushukelwa expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that many of the learners face serious challenges. “Some of our children don’t even have shoes. This donation will go a long way towards restoring their dignity and improving their school experience,” he said.
Other departments and professionals are urged to join the initiative, and parents are encouraged to protect their children.

As part of the outreach programme, the learners were also educated about the roles and responsibilities of the visiting departments. The aim was to inspire them to consider careers in justice, law and social development.
