Mother speaks out after pothole injuries in Vryheid

Potholes in Vryheid cause injuries and deaths; residents call for immediate municipal action.

Editor –
I am writing this as a very concerned parent and citizen of Vryheid. Potholes in this town are a very big concern, as there are many citizens both young and old who have been hurt and some have even lost loved ones due to potholes. Three people were jogging and one stepped into a pothole, hitting her ribs on the ground. Another jogger lost a tooth. A recent incident saw a young boy who was riding his bicycle hit a pothole and get hurt very badly. How many school kids ride their bicycles to school? What if they hit a pothole, fall and get paralysed or even worse, a car or truck comes along and they lose their lives?
As a concerted mother, I took it upon myself and went to AbaQulusi Local Municipality to have a chat with the person who is in charge of our roads. A personal assistant in the municipality pointed him out to me and he promised to start fixing where my son fell and hit a pothole in Market Street. But what was surprising is that he did not know where Market Street is in Vryheid, but nonetheless promised to get it fixed. A few days went by and I drove down that road and guess what, nothing had been done. How is it possible that he is in charge of taking care of our roads, but doesn’t even know our streets? I also asked if I may use his name for future reference and he said ‘no’. This also made me question a lot about him and his work…
Now, we as citizens, parents and children are left to be responsible for unnecessary doctors’ accounts, deaths and damages to our cars! Who do we turn to for help, as some of us are struggling to make ends meet and we have to go over our budgets to make payments? We need help!
