The mother accused of allegedly attacking two of her three children in Lennoxton on September 11, made a brief appearance at the Newcastle District Court on Monday, September 22, for what was supposed to be a formal bail application.

However, her attorney, Zubair Chothia requested to abandon bail and proceeded to make an application in terms of Section 77 (1) of the Criminal Procedures Act, to allow the accused to be evaluated by a Psychiatrist in order to determine his client’s state of mind.

He advised Presiding Officer, Kamlesh Gurlal that the family had been consulted on the matter and had agreed that the accused be evaluated before any further court proceedings continued.

Magistrate Gurlal postponed the hearing to September 26 to allow the defence to secure a private psychiatrist for the accused.
