Community restores 1885 Nieuwe Republiek Raadsaal in Vryheid
Vryheid re-opens the restored 1885 Nieuwe Republiek Raadsaal with community celebration.
Eighteen months of planning, restoration and community effort came full circle on Heritage Day with the re-opening of the 1885 Nieuwe Republiek Raadsaal.
Once on the verge of destruction, this landmark had fallen victim to vandalism, fires and vagrancy. Concerned residents raised the alarm at a community meeting led by Director of Community Services TS Mthembu, where it was agreed that a committee under the guidance of André van Ellinckhuyzen would take responsibility for saving and restoring the museum.
Thanks to months of hard work and generous donations, the Raadsaal was brought back to life, with both the interior and exterior carefully restored. The re-opening was celebrated in true community spirit, despite the wet and rainy weather. Stalls, a bustling market, and spirited performances by local school choirs and dancers drew a strong crowd. Residents turned out in numbers to explore the restored museum and admire what many described as ‘a piece of the town’s soul restored’.
Speaking on behalf of the municipality, Ward Councillor Magda Viktor praised the committee and volunteers for their dedication. “Their work has preserved a vital part of our town’s history,” she said.
On behalf of himself and the committee, Van Ellinckhuyzen expressed gratitude to all who supported the project. “I cannot mention every name, because there are too many, but know that your efforts did not go unnoticed. The museum is available for social events and I encourage families to bring their children to experience a part of history by visiting the Raadsaal.”
The re-opening of the 140-year-old building not only safeguards a piece of the past, but also promises to draw visitors to Vryheid, adding cultural and economic value to the community.
