AbaQulusi opens window period for illegal electricity connections
AbaQulusi Local Municipality opens a window period to legalise electricity connections and restore power.
AbaQulusi Local Municipality has announced a special window period for households with illegal electricity connections, bypassed meters and cut cables. The programme, which runs from October 2 to 14, aims to restore services and stabilise the local power supply.
During this time, residents can come forward to report any of the above issues at designated venues across the area, including Cliffdale Hall, Hlobane Hall, Coronation Hall, Vaalbank municipal offices, Bhekuzulu Hall, Mondo Thusong Centre, Bhekumthetho Hall in Emondlo, Sasko and Eskwatasi (Esikhame Crèche), the Vryheid Town Library Hall, and Lakeside Hall.
Municipal officials said that once the necessary work has been completed, such as the installation of new meters and the replacement of cables, households will be required to buy electricity legally. Those who are found tampering with meters or making illegal connections after the window period will face disconnection and fines, as outlined in municipal policy.
The municipality has also confirmed that the debt amnesty programme, first approved in April this year, has been extended until October 31. The programme allows residents in arrears to benefit from a 60% to 40% settlement option. Customers who still owe on their accounts are urged to visit the municipal offices and make payment arrangements with the chief financial officer.
Officials say this initiative is a chance for households to regularise their electricity supply while also addressing outstanding debts.
