Police nab suspects stealing electricity infrastructure on R33
Police arrest four suspects in possession of stolen electricity equipment, including Eskom transformer.
Police have arrested four suspects in possession of stolen electricity equipment, including an Eskom transformer, this morning (Thursday). This is a major blow to criminal syndicates targeting public infrastructure.
The suspects, three foreign nationals and one South African, aged 41 to 44, were caught along the R33 between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg. Officials say the thefts are part of a wider operation that threatens essential services in local communities.
MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, praised law enforcement for acting swiftly. “These arrests send a strong message that criminal syndicates will not be allowed to operate with impunity in our province,” he said.
He urged residents to report suspicious activity, warning that theft of electricity, water, and sanitation infrastructure disrupts service delivery and strains already stretched municipal budgets.
The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs confirmed it will continue working with municipalities and law enforcement to protect public infrastructure and hold offenders accountable.
