uThukela launches water restoration programme in Somsuku area

Mayor Shabalala also donated a JoJo tank to a community member in need.

uThukela Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala has officially launched a new initiative called Operation Khipha Amanzi, under the theme “Where water once flowed, it will flow again!” The programme was inaugurated in KwaSomsuku, Ward 30, within Alfred Duma Local Municipality yesterday (October 22).

Operation Khipha Amanzi objectives:

According to uThukela District Municipality, this initiative highlights their unwavering commitment to restoring and maintaining water supply systems across the region. The primary objective of Operation Khipha Amanzi is to identify communities facing water supply challenges and allocate the necessary time, expertise and resources to resolve these issues effectively.

The ultimate goal is to ensure that all residents enjoy a reliable and consistent water supply. Encouraging progress has already been made in KwaSomsuku, where residents have begun receiving water after an extended period without access. Meanwhile, technical teams continue working diligently to repair damaged infrastructure and fully restore the system’s functionality.

Initiative set to spread across the district:

The mayor highlighted that many other communities across the district are also in need of similar interventions, and assured residents that the programme will continue to reach all other affected areas in due course. The mayor – who was accompanied by Ward Councillor Madondo, uThukela District Speaker Cllr TY Nqubuka, Cllr Buthelezi, Cllr Mjiyakho and Cllr Mhlongo – visited the KwaSomsuku community, where the programme was officially introduced to local residents.

Shabalala expressed sincere appreciation to the KwaSomsuku community for their patience and co-operation during the water shortages. He confirmed that the area now benefits from upgrades linked to the Ekuvukeni Water Scheme, which forms part of a long-term, sustainable water supply solution for the region. Shabalala also urged community members to repair any broken or leaking taps to ensure that water is used responsibly and shared fairly among all households.

As a gesture of goodwill and compassion, the mayor donated a JoJo tank to a community member in need, who is caring for a child with a disability.

The community expressed gratitude to uThukela District Municipality for restoring their water supply, while also requesting improvements to the local sanitation system.
