Uthukela Youth Sector holds meeting to address challenges

The forum calls for collaboration in building a safer, healthier future for the youth.

The Uthukela District Civil Society Forum Youth Sector is stepping up its efforts to tackle pressing youth issues through strengthened collaboration with local stakeholders.

On Tuesday (November 11), deputy secretary Sibusiso Blessing Madondo and chairperson Senamile Nomshado Hlongwane led a delegation to the Inkosilangalibalela Sub-District Youth Sector Task Team.

The visit aimed to engage the Youth Council chairperson, youth officer and HIV officer in finding sustainable solutions to challenges affecting young people in the sub-district.

Health concerns highlighted

Health took centre stage in the discussions, with the forum noting a 1.1 million gap in HIV, TB and STI prevention, testing and treatment. Stakeholders were urged to work together to close this gap through awareness drives and improved access to health services for the youth.

Focus on youth development

The forum also emphasised the importance of economic empowerment, skills training and mentorship programmes to address youth unemployment.

Madondo said that collaboration with government departments and local businesses is vital in creating opportunities for young people to thrive.

Teenage pregnancy a growing concern

Teenage pregnancy was identified as another critical challenge. The forum called for more education-based prevention programmes and community support initiatives to help reduce early pregnancies and empower young women.

Call to end gender-based violence

The Youth Sector reaffirmed its support for the Purple Movement, a campaign that fights against gender-based violence (GBV). Chairperson Hlongwane stressed the need for communities to unite in protecting women and children from abuse.
