This saw him getting an opportunity to meet and dine with officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) in Ulundi, where the officials held a graduation ceremony for tour guides.
Journey From Reluctant Learner to Tourism Enthusiast
Mncube, who aspires to be a lawyer one day, says he never saw himself being a Tourism student. However, after a few years of studying it, he realised that Tourism is actually quite interesting. “I fell in love with the subject in Grade 11 when Miss Makathini taught me…”

Miss Makathini, who has always supported and believed in Mncube, explained that, “I have taught Tourism for nearly 20 years and I feel this subject is fulfilling, with many opportunities…”

“He received a certificate and a laptop, and there was an award for the teacher – which is me; an award for the school; and an award for the Zululand District.”
Gratitude to Family, Teachers and Sponsors
Mncube is extremely grateful to Miss Makathini; his big brother; and his mother, whom he says goes ‘above and beyond’ to help him reach his full potential.
Miss Makathini concluded by thanking the Tourism subject advisor Dr Nkumane, Principal Masango, and Niashandi Professional Services for donating four desktop computers for the Tourism learners.
