6 injured in major R33/R34 intersection crash outside Vryheid

Six people are injured after a truck and bakkie collide outside Vryheid.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance and several emergency services responded to a major collision this afternoon (Monday). The crash involved a bakkie and a heavy motor vehicle at the R33 and R34 intersection outside Vryheid.

Responders find truck overturned

Responders arrived to find the truck overturned and the bakkie badly damaged. According to early information from the scene, the truck allegedly failed to stop at the intersection, causing the bakkie to crash into its side.

Paramedics work in chaotic scene

KwaZulu Private Ambulance media liaison Craig Botha said the scene was chaotic when crews arrived. “The impact left both vehicles heavily damaged and created a very dangerous working environment,” he said. “Paramedics moved fast to reach the patients and begin stabilising them.”

Six patients assessed through triage

A full triage process followed for the six patients.

Two in critical condition

Two critical patients suffered severe head injuries, one from each vehicle, and required advanced life support. Three others sustained serious injuries, including broken bones and possible spinal damage. One patient was treated for minor injuries.

Strong inter-agency cooperation

Botha said cooperation between agencies was essential. “With the truck overturned, the risk factors increase. Every team on scene worked together to manage the hazards and get patients treated as quickly as possible.”

All patients transported to hospital

All six patients were stabilised and transported to nearby hospitals. No one was trapped in the wreckage.

Traffic heavily affected

Traffic officials controlled the intersection, which experienced major disruption while emergency personnel worked on the roadway.
