Public petition for traffic circle at Vryheid Junction intersection

“The implementation of a traffic circle at this intersection could greatly improve these conditions and decrease the number of fatalities.''

Many lives have been lost and people badly injured in accidents that occur regularly at the Vryheid Junction intersection. The junction is notorious for its rising death toll caused by crashes; both heavy and light motor vehicles have been involved in accidents at the same spot.
There is now a petition for the Department of Transport to look into this matter and possibly erect a traffic circle or traffic lights to prevent accidents and save lives. This public petition has been making rounds and Vryheid residents are urged to add their names to stop the ‘killings’.
‘’As a resident of Vryheid and a private-sector emergency dispatcher, I see lives torn apart, lives lost, damage to property and unnecessary heartache due to the R33/R34 intersection, also known as ‘Engen Junction.’
“The heavy traffic at this intersection is used by locals, transporters and holidaymakers. People are saying that the stop signs at this intersection are not helping, and traffic calming measures during peak hours are not in place, as it’s a two-way stop intersection. Misty conditions during the colder months add to the risk when crossing the intersection.
“The implementation of a traffic circle at this intersection could greatly improve these conditions and decrease the number of fatalities.
“We urge the Department of Transport to look into a traffic circle. By signing this petition, you are supporting safer roads and better access for all residents in our community. Let’s work together to minimise unnecessary accidents that put lives at risk,” added Road Traffic Angels’ Marlize Harmse.
