Road safety demo brings crash scene to Nardini learners

Realistic crash demo teaches Nardini learners vital road safety habits before the festive season.

As schools get ready to close for the festive season, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services delivered a powerful reminder about road safety with a staged accident scene at Nardini Convent School last Tuesday morning.

Realistic crash scene creates impact

Frikkie Bekker and his team created a realistic crash scenario on the school grounds, giving learners an up-close look at how paramedics respond when lives are at risk. The demonstration comes at a crucial time as families prepare for holiday travel.

Inside an emergency response

Bekker guided learners through each step of an emergency response — from assessing injuries to stabilising patients. The lifelike setup held their attention and highlighted how quickly an everyday moment can turn dangerous on the road.

Part of a joint safety programme

The presentation formed part of a joint road safety programme with Drive More Safely NPO. Alida Venter joined Bekker to reinforce simple but vital safety habits, introducing Danny Cat, the NPO’s mascot, who teaches children to use pedestrian crossings, look both ways, and always buckle up.

‘Making safety lessons unforgettable’

“Seeing a crash scene up close helps learners understand the real-life consequences of unsafe driving,” Bekker said. “Our goal is to make road safety lessons unforgettable and practical.”

Venter added that hands-on learning makes a lasting difference. “Interactive demonstrations like this help children remember safety rules and apply them every day,” she said.

Learners engage with practical lessons

The session caught the full attention of the learners, who asked questions and participated in practical demonstrations. Teachers said the lesson could not have come at a better time, with many families preparing for long-distance trips over the holidays.

A clear message for the festive season

The morning wrapped up with a clear message from both organisations: safety begins with awareness — and every small habit has the power to save a life.
