Neighbour sentenced to life for rape of 61-year-old woman
A man receives life for raping a 61-year-old woman in Mondlo.
A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nquthu Regional Court today (Friday) following his conviction for the rape of a 61-year-old woman in the Mondlo area in May 2024.
Violent home invasion
On the evening of the attack, the complainant was in her garden and, upon returning to her home, found the accused inside. He threatened her with a knife, instructed her to lock the door, and forced her into the bedroom where he raped her. The complainant recognised him as a neighbour but did not speak, fearing for her life. The accused then fled the scene.
Family intervention fails
The complainant reported the incident to her daughter. When her daughter approached the accused’s brother, the accused and his brother tried to mediate the matter, presenting a compensation letter signed by the accused. The complainant reported the matter to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest.
Court delivers justice
Prosecutor Dan Motha told the court, “The complainant was attacked within the sanctity of her own home. She has endured lasting emotional and psychological scars because of this incident.” The accused was convicted, sentenced to life imprisonment, and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
NPA hails conviction
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, NPA Regional Spokesperson, said, “We welcome this conviction and sentence, particularly as South Africa observes the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. Sentences of this nature reaffirm the NPA’s unwavering pursuit of justice and send a clear message that violence against women will not be tolerated.”
