Operation arrests 53 motorists for drunk driving

The Road Traffic Inspectorate arrested a total of 53 motorists for drunk driving during its latest no-nonsense weekend operation in Newcastle.

53 Newcastle motorists found themselves behind bars this past weekend, as the crackdown on drunk driving continued with the #NenzanilaEzweni No-Nonsense Operation running from Friday to Sunday.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said motorists continued to underestimate the dedication of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI). ‘

“They think the RTI team is playing games. Despite arresting 32 motorists in Newcastle on Friday, they continued to drive recklessly. A total of 53 motorists have since been arrested.”

Duma said the operation remained ‘unstoppable’.

He noted that since August 15, the RTI had arrested 1540 motorists during its ongoing no-nonsense blitz operations.

Those arrested over the weekend are expected to appear in court this week.

“RTI and SAPS will arrest even more again,” he concluded.
