Local school community pushes limits at Warrior Race
New Republic teachers and parents complete their first Warrior Race, strengthening teamwork and community spirit.
Fifteen dedicated teachers, parents and friends from New Republic School set off on Friday morning for Pretoria, ready to take on their very first Warrior Race at Bosveld. The group – made up of educators, parents and supporters – took on the demanding obstacle-course event to promote fitness, mental health and stronger community ties. Warrior Ric, who recently MC’d the Michaelis Challenge, was also part of the team.
What the Warrior Race involves
The Warrior Race is known for its tough combination of running, climbing, crawling and strength obstacles. Participants face mud pits, rope climbs, tyre runs and steep terrain, making it a real test of endurance and teamwork. The event draws competitors from across the country and is widely seen as a platform for personal growth through grit and camaraderie.
The motivation behind the mission
Carmen Purchase, one of the organisers, explained the heart behind the initiative. “Being a teacher, mental health is of the utmost importance. Dealing with children requires you to be at your best,” she said. “Exercise not only promotes mental health, but as women and mothers, it also helps maintain physical well-being. This initiative strengthens the bond between parents and teachers, because teachers ‘parent’ children for a huge part of the day. It truly takes a village to raise a child.”
Months of preparation
The team began their training several months ago, preparing for the demanding course with regular fitness sessions and strategy discussions. On Wednesday, they attended a final quick training session at the gym before leaving for Pretoria, full of excitement and determination.

Teamwork on race day
Their unity showed on race day when a teammate suffered an ankle injury on the course. The group immediately lived out the Warrior Race motto of ‘No warrior gets left behind’. Others in the team conquered personal challenges of their own, including members who faced the water obstacles despite not being able to swim. It was a day that proved teamwork mattered more than finishing times.
Crossing the finish line
After crossing the line, Purchase summed up the experience with a wide smile and only three words, “It was awesome!”
Gratitude to supporters
The team thanked all the sponsors who made the trip and race entry possible, saying the experience strengthened them as individuals and as a community.
More than a physical challenge
This Warrior Race adventure is more than just a physical challenge for the New Republic School team. It’s a chance to showcase perseverance, encourage healthy lifestyles, and reinforce the importance of teamwork among those who care for the school’s children every day.
