Vryheid breaks annual rainfall record set in 2010

The town has officially exceeded its highest annual rainfall record, with more rain expected.

Vryheid has officially surpassed its highest annual rainfall on record, exceeding a benchmark that has stood for more than a decade.

Rainfall exceeds 2010 benchmark

According to Councillor Magda Viktor, together with two long-time community members who independently keep rainfall records, the area has now recorded 1 125mm of rain for 2025 to date. This exceeds the previous annual record of 1 120mm, which was set in 2010.

“These are records I have personally kept since 1992, and we have now gone beyond anything previously measured,” Viktor said.

Independent data supports findings

The two community members confirmed that their own records align with Viktor’s findings, reinforcing the accuracy of the data and highlighting just how exceptional this year’s rainfall has been.

Relief and concern for the community

Viktor said while the rainfall has brought welcome relief to water resources, it has also increased pressure on infrastructure and heightened concerns about flooding in certain areas.

Residents urged to remain cautious

Residents are advised to remain vigilant during heavy rain, particularly in low-lying areas, as saturated ground could lead to further complications if wet conditions persist.
