Suspect arrested after fatal assault

A Vryheid man dies after an alleged assault, with police arresting a suspect.

A 32-year-old man died after he was allegedly assaulted at a house in Vryheid, and a suspect has since been arrested.

Police confirm timeline of events

Police sources who are not authorised to speak to the media confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday evening and that the victim, Siphesihle Twala, was found dead the following morning.

Victim allegedly taken from home

According to the sources, Twala and his father were fetched at about 19:00 from where they live near the corner of Stretch Crescent and Boeren Street. They were allegedly taken to a house in Spoor Street by a man known to them.

Alleged assault at Spoor Street house

At the house, Twala was allegedly assaulted with a sambok and a knopkierie. There are allegations that he was suspected of being involved in a housebreaking at the same premises, but police said this is still under investigation.

Victim returned home after incident

After the assault, Twala and his father were taken back to their place of residence, where they later went to sleep in the same room.

Visible injuries noted

“One could see multiple injuries to his head, back and sides, and there was a cut above his right eye,” a police source said.

Body discovered the following morning

The father discovered Twala unresponsive in bed at about 05:00 on Wednesday morning. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested. The investigation continues.
